Can I use potassium chloride?
Yes. It works in softeners the same way sodium chloride does but replaces the hard water minerals with potassium instead of sodium. Extracting potassium chloride from the earth is more costly than mining sodium chloride, so potassium chloride is more expensive. Potassium is also not as efficient as sodium chloride and you may need to regenerate more often.
